Matcha Green Tea Cupcakes with Matcha Frosting

Ingredients

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 ¼ cups (160g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp matcha green tea powder (high-quality, ceremonial or culinary grade)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup (120ml) whole milk (or almond milk for a dairy-free option)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Matcha Buttercream (for extra matcha flavor!):

  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups (210g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk

Instructions

Making the Cupcakes:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with paper liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, matcha powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into the cupcake liners, filling each about ⅔ full.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cupcakes cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

For Matcha Buttercream:

  1. Beat the butter until light and creamy.
  2. Sift in the powdered sugar and matcha powder, then mix until combined.
  3. Add heavy cream/milk, then beat for 2-3 minutes until smooth and fluffy.

Assembling the Cupcakes:

  1. Once the cupcakes are completely cool, frost them using a piping bag or a spatula.
  2. Optionally, dust a little extra matcha powder on top for a beautiful finishing touch.
  3. Serve and enjoy with a cup of hot or iced matcha!

Pro Tips for Perfect Matcha Cupcakes

✔️ Use high-quality matcha – A good quality matcha will give you a bright green color and better flavor. Lower-quality matcha can be dull and bitter.
✔️ Don’t overmix the batter – Overmixing can make the cupcakes dense instead of light and fluffy.
✔️ Store leftovers properly – Keep cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week.

✔️ Use high-quality matcha – Top your cupcake with a fresh raspberry!  Raspberry and matcha are a flavor combo made in heaven!

Enjoy your delicious matcha green tea cupcakes! 💚 Let me know if you try them!

The Science Behind Sweet Treats & Time Changes

Believe it or not, there’s a psychological reason why cupcakes might actually help with the Daylight Savings transition. Baking can be a calming activity, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Plus, a little sugar rush (in moderation!) can give you the boost you need when your body is struggling to adjust.

Not to mention, sharing cupcakes with friends, family, or coworkers can turn an annoying time shift into a fun excuse for a mini celebration.
